THE WRONG SAUCEPAN
LADY tells us that some years ago she was tells us that some years ago she was making a short stay with some friends in Yorkshire, and amongst the pets in that country house was a small monkey, whose pranks were always providing the household with some new subject for amusement. He used to lead the other pets, especially the cat, a terrible life. One of his favourite tricks was to steal their food from an old saucepan in which it was often kept. and either eat it himself or, still more maliciously, hide it in some place where only he himself could reach it again.
But at last he got well paid out for his ill nature .The cook of course tried to protect the other animals as much as she could, and one day she had driven him away from their food just in time to prevent it being stolen. Disappointed in this, Jocko cast his eyes round the room to discover something else to lay hands upon. He caught sight of a large sauce pan on the fire, with some soup boiling merrily in it, and seemed to think that it was simply a variety of the little old one in which he had so often found the food meant, for the other pets. At any rate, the cook was suddenly startled by a violent squealing and chattering, and turned round to see Master Jocko wringing his paws and jumping in a hurry from the hot fire-place. He had got well burnt for his greed and mischievousness, and it was a long time before he would go near the kitchen-range again, or even touch the little saucepan which had been the origin of his mistake.
